The most well-known form of gem quality diopside is chrome diopside. It was discovered in Siberia in 1988 and it's been used in jewelry making ever since. Although chromium diopside is a semi-precious gemstone, it is sometimes referred to as Siberian emerald, even though emerald is a highly-priced stone.
